Shimra is a rising junior at UIC, majoring in Computer Science. While she’s currently exploring a career in Software Engineering, she’s also drawn to Data Science and Machine Learning. She’s fascinated by how the skills she’s acquired so far are being applied across various fields.
This summer, Shimra was accepted into the Break Through Tech AI program in partnership with Cornell Tech. She discovered this incredible opportunity through Break Through Tech’s LinkedIn page. The year-long program equips students with essential skills in Machine Learning, including developing models that address real-world challenges. From May through July, Shimra completed a foundational AI course and is now collaborating with her team at Allstate to develop a model that predicts the total cost of auto insurance claims. The program also offers extensive mentorship and networking opportunities.
“The program from Break Through Tech is broadening my skill set by helping me learn machine learning algorithms and how to improve the existing models. This will not only help me in a future career in Machine Learning but I can also apply the knowledge across fields in Software Engineering and Data Science. I also have the amazing opportunity to network with professionals in these fields and receive valuable insights from industry mentors.”
Shimra credits the Any Fellowship Program for helping her get accepted into The Break Through Tech Program and giving her the valuable skills to thrive in it.
